The Rise of the Documentary

Documentaries are more in the zeitgeist now than ever before. We live in a very raw social time, and the high volume of documentaries coming out – both large, mainstream stories and small production narratives – only reflects that. Along with endless access to media, from streaming services to television and movie theaters, filmmakers have a wide variety of platforms from which to communicate their angle on what is happening in the world around us.

Documentary Film ProductionMatthew Heineman’s documentary, “City of Ghosts,” made a huge impact at the Sundance Film Festival this year, as Variety reports. It explores the unchartered waters of war, terrorism and the manipulation of ideas through social media. While these are age-old issues, they are depicted in Heineman’s film through the lens of new technology. Some of the harsh and stark scenes, including actual killings carried out by members of ISIS, are shocking, but help give a realistic and revealing look at the issues while educating viewers.

We have seen a lot of focus on the plight of race in the United States, as well. Ezra Edelman’s “O.J. Made in America” looks at the 1994 O.J. Simpson case with a new sense of racial awareness. While, controversial, the documentary brings to light some very poignant truths about America’s past. Ava DuVernay’s “13th” is another powerful documentary on racism in America. It shows us how the horrors of racism in this country still exist, but in a more insidious and systematic way. These riveting documentaries have been nominated for Oscars, due to their subjects, moving executions and cultural relevance.
